Description:

    In Russian country culture traditional cradle for babies was ЗЫБКА (Zibka) - a cradle suspended to a flexible pole to a ceiling near to the furnace. Zibka enabled to swing the child very smoothly and for a long time. A cradle in the form of a rectangular box narrowed from top to bottom. The bottom is formed as two cross-section crossbeams. Two willow handles are attached to the walls. The external wall is painted by dark red color. As a laying on a bottom were usually put hay, straw, cloths, under a head placed a pillow also with hay and straw. For protection against mosquitoes, flies and light on a cradle the special fabric were hung up. Trailing position of a cradle was not only reasons of convenience, but also was filled with the mythological contents. Peasants considered that spatial isolation of the newborn from the ground, from "bottom", provided to him preservation of vital force.
